Alpha Chapter History

Executive Board

The Alpha Chapter of Lambda Sigma Phi was chartered April 23rd, 2017 in the house of the Mu Chapter on the campus of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. However, the origin of the Alpha Chapter dates back even farther.

In the fall of 2015, five men at the University of North Alabama (UNA) gathered together to explore the potential of founding a chapter of a distinctively Christian fraternity at the university. Among them were several future founders of the Alpha Chapter, including: Brothers Samuel Mashburn, Jordan Cooper, and John Michael Russell. The group had decided on founding a colony of a large national Christian fraternity, which Brother Russell had known before transferring to UNA from Mississippi State University. By the early spring of 2016, all seemed to be going well for the group, which by now had grown to fourteen men who were loosely associated and interested in forming a chapter. Although all seemed to be going well for the group, there were tensions under the surface which would crumble the foundation of the infant association. These contradicting values became clear when one man tried to persuade the others to allow a man openly living in a sinful lifestyle to join the group. Having not agreed on central values, nor having a common vision, the loose association crumbled. This was a lesson the men who would later become brothers would never forget. As Proverbs 29-18 says,

“Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.”

Although all seemed to be lost for the group, the men dedicated to establishing a Christ-centered brotherhood on campus pressed on trying to gather potential new members to form a chapter on the campus of the university. At this point, the two who remained working towards the mission were Brothers Mashburn and Russell. Brother Russell was a junior at the time, and Brother Mashburn was a senior in high school who would enter the university full-time in the fall. Brother Mashburn was able to recruit several men over the summer that would join the potential chapter in fall 2016, including: Brothers Chase Holcombe, Jacob Bradley, Nicholas Watts, Seth Callahan, and Michael Thompson. By the end of the fall semester, the infant group had grown to Men had completed the first of three phases to starting a colony of the large national fraternity they had been pursuing. The national leadership then lost interest around that time in the colony due to the small size of the university. However, the men were determined to not lose hope, and establish a Christ-centered fraternity at UNA. They believed God had called them to establish a brotherhood on their campus, and that the Lord would provide a way. As it is written in the Gospel of John 14:12-14,

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.”

Believing they were following the will of God, the men pressed on. Over the Christmas break, the men deliberated on whether to form an original fraternity, or to establish a chapter of another Christian fraternity already in existence. In early January 2017, Brother Mashburn discovered Lambda Sigma Phi through an article about the chapter published in USA Today many years prior. Brother Mashburn then reached out to Mu Chapter Advisor and Alumni, Brother Ken Hill, to see if Lambda Sigma Phi would like to expand to North Alabama. The men met as soon as they came back to campus for the start of the spring semester. The men decided collectively to pursue founding the first expansion chapter of Lambda Sigma Phi, later to be known as the Alpha Chapter. They elected an Executive Board that mirrored the board of the Brothers at Mu. The founding Executive Board consisted on the following men: President Samuel Mashburn, Vice President of External Affairs Chase Holcombe, Vice President of Internal Affairs Seth Callahan, Vice President of Judicial Affairs Michael Thompson, Secretary Sean Gillman, Treasurer Christopher Drensek, and Chaplain Jacob Bradley.
